Campus / Facilities

University of Western Ontario

7.0 / 10

UWO has one of the most beautiful campuses in Canada. It is a very large campus with buildings from both the previous century and the modern. The grounds, walkways, public spaces are well kept by staff and students alike. The relatively new gym and recreation centre are a huge upgrade to the campus and students utilize these facilities very often. There could be more restaurants to choose from on campus especially since there is such a large student population. Library space isn't a problem during the year and even during exam periods. Of course, more library/study space wouldn't hurt.

The gym is great! They have a section of cardio equipment and lots of weights and different machines. There is a pool and numerous courts. There is a large selection of food all around the campus. The campus looks beautiful. The libraries are very good. There are a couple, and it is a great place to study.

I am a student at Brescia, one of the affiliates at UWO. The affiliates offer smaller class sizes, more personalized experiences, and stronger communities. Brescia's residence is less than a year old and contains a majority of single rooms, with semi-private bathrooms and huge closets. The food is absolutely amazing and I feel so lucky to be at Brescia.

Western RezNet could afford to be a bit more reliable. I had wi-fi included in my residence fee but most of the time the signal was weak and the internet would load really slowly. And there were times where the internet would just cut out. However, once I brought a router up, everything was fine. I never had to contact IT services but I've heard that they're pretty helpful when they are needed. Same goes for academic counselling; however, I've also heard that there are times where they won't really provide much help either. Registering for a course is super easy; what's hard is getting into a class section that you want to get into. Course registration appointments are assigned by lottery so, if you're unlucky like me and get a late appointment, you'll find that you can't get into a lot of the classes that you wanted to get into. I had to keep constantly checking to see if free spots opened up. I've never used the health services but I've heard good things. Campus police is helpful.

The student services offered ay my school were exceptional. The course registration process was very easy and efficient, unlike some other schools. The wifi on campus was fast and always available. Our health services were also quite good - the doctors were easy to talk to and always there to help us, no matter what we needed. The services on campus were great - post office, travel agent, photo studio, pharmacy, etc.

The internet access at Western is a little unreliable and occasionally won't connect. When it does connect, the speed is good. I have never personally had to use IT services. Academic counselling has been very useful and I find that I know exactly what to do to graduate, and I don't feel lost when it comes to course selection. The registration process is pretty bad. If you don't get a slot on the first day, you're basically screwed. Most people don't get into all the classes they want to. Health services is great. Counselling is free for students and very accessible, easy to make appointments, and the psychologists are great. Campus security I see around often but cannot comment on the usefulness.

University of Western Ontario

My first year at UWO, I really disliked the atmosphere and student experience. I felt that my classes were too easy, that I was surrounded by unintelligent and unmotivated people and that I didn't fit in with the "party all the time" poeple (which was pretty much everyone in my residence). However, as the years have gone on, my program has become more specialized and I have moved out of residence. I have found many more students who are intelligent and like-minded, who are very friendly and approachable and that I fit in with.

An amazing school with such a high level of school spirit. There is always something going on and you will never be bored. There is a club or committee for any interest. The nightlife and parties are infamous as well! Aside from all the fun and partying, when it was time to get to work, the students knew how to put the partying aside and get serious. A really good mix of social life and academics. I absolutely loved my school and wish I could do it all over again.

The culture of UWO is one of the reasons that I choose to do my undergraduate and law degree here. It is very inclusive and friendly. Students are encouraged to make friends with anyone they come into contact, including in classes where any competitiveness is friendly and never at the expense of fellow students. The school encourages fun and parties as well as hard-working students. UWO also encourages leaders to arise from the student population with a large collection of clubs, student government, and other associations with which students can get involved.

City / Location

University of Western Ontario

7.0 / 10

London, Ontario has beautiful Fall and Spring weather but rains more often than other parts of Ontario. Winters are cold and the snow-removal services of the city are not as good as they could be. The London Transit System is very effective in moving students and city-goers from one place to another. Buses are on time and run often enough to avoid over-crowding. Though restaurants and bars are great in London, there are not enough restaurants directly around the UWO campus and surrounding students neighbourhoods.

The city of London is largely a "University City" - the whole region surrounding campus is kind of like a "campus bubble". As such, we don't really see many people other than students and faculty around campus, which is nice. The downtown section of London, however, is not a nice place. The "transportation district" (bus terminals, train station) is a dirty place filled with creepy people. I feel very unsafe downtown London.

London tends to get hit with lots of snow and it is often cold there most of the year. Summers are really nice though. We have campus security and lots of services to help make you feel safe at any time during the day Lots of jobs are available with the university, professors, and others. Far from home but definitely worth the move. Night life is decent, lots of bars.

Academics

University of Western Ontario

7.0 / 10

The University of Western Ontario offers a broad range of courses from all Faculties, allowing students to learn something a bit outside their comfort zone. For the most part, professors are friendly and fair in marking and evaluations. There are TAs available for help as well office hours to visit the prof. UWO is very well known in Ontario, Canada however it does not hold as much merit when mentioned outside of Ontario and Canada. There are the obvious exceptions such as UWO's Ivey School of Business in the financial world.

Most professors are great at instruction and actually enjoy the instruction aspect of their job Profs are usually available whenever you need them Western is widely know as a research intensive university and they are well known throughout the world Mostly exam based grading for the first two years but it gets to more practical and hands on stuff later.

I am in the kinesiology program at Western, and this program has been rated one of the best in Canada. The knowledge I have received over four years has been invaluable, and I could not have picked a better program, or school for my program. The professors are knowledgable and approachable, and genuinely care about your success. One particular professor recently wrote me an outstanding letter of reference for graduate school, which resulted in me getting accepted to the school. The class sizes in first year are quite large (300-600), but get much narrower as the years go on. In 3rd and 4th year the classes are around 50 people. The professors test material in a way that really makes you think. Depending on the program, classes are either diverse or not. For example, in a BSc, there is barely any room for electives due to all the required courses. However in a BA, there is a lot of room for electives.

Career

University of Western Ontario

My program provides lots of career training and i feel confident entering a job in my field of study. The career services on campus are subpar however the schools name is well recognized so i dont anticipate having trouble finding work once i have completed my studies. Should be able to find a good paying job.

Only recently has the university begun to offer courses to assist graduate alumni with job searching networking opportuities and strategies. They have only recently begun to realise that not all graduate students want a career in academia and in fact there are not enough vacancies for them anyway. This is a step in the right direction but I would also like to encourage them to assist International graduate students a little more. Not only is tuition (not including ancillary fees and health insurance) for international graduate students triple that of domestic students, these students also have other immigration related expenses to incurr.

At Western (UWO) there is a huge push to get involved, right from the moment you arrive at the University. The "sophs", who guide the freshman are some of the most "popular" people at UWO. There are endless opportunities for involvement for all types of students with all types of interests. It is also very helpful that we have an entire club week where you can see what clubs and committees are available and you can get involved pretty easily. There is an issue with getting executive positions though, in that the executive committees tend to be very clique-y and are often very intimidating and cold towards those they don't know.

Very easy to get involved and the community makes it very hard NOT to get involved in some sort of club LOTS of clubs are available to choose from, and even if you can't find what you like then you are easily able to form your own club Opportunities provided by the clubs are great

There are TONS of clubs/teams at Western. During the first few weeks of class, all the clubs and teams set up booths in the university community to increase interest. We're all encouraged to sign up and participate in at least one club or team and it's seen as a second family on campus. While I'm not sure about a lot of the clubs, the ones that I've had experience with have a multiple number of opportunities for you to get involved and participate in many different activities.

As an alumni, Western always sends newsletters and e-mails that include current events and networking opportunities. They are usually only held in London or Toronto, though. The news about alumni isn\'t always necessarily relevant to new grads.

Overall Advocacy

University of Western Ontario

9.0 / 10

I am very likely to recommend this University to all of my friends and family. There is no complaints. The campus location, facilities, food, library, staff and classes are just impeccable and I would not choose it to be any different. I would rate my overall happiness as being a student at a 9. I say this because overall I am very happy that I had the opportunity to be there. The only thing is I miss being so far away from family, but really that has not much to do with the University itself. I believe that we are sincerely getting our moneys worth of education. I thoroughly enjoy my classes while learning a great deal of information while having fun. It seems as if the professors sincerely care about our future endeavors and will do anything to help make our dreams possible. I would definitely choose the same school if I had to do it all over again. I feel like it couldn't of gone any better and I would not be the person I am today. I have met numerous friends and made lots of memories that I will cherish forever.

I would be somewhat likely in recommending my university to friends/family depending on their circumstance and their program. I would say that Western is pretty good at keeping students engaged and thinking but there are definitely better programs out there for most fields. I am currently very happy with this school for my program at least, although I am worried about job prospects. I would chose the same school just because it has helped my grow alot as a person.

Despite it being a rocky start into Western, I would choose this school over again because it has the most supportive learning environment. I have also gotten to meet lifelong friends here that are nothing but encouraging and supportive. Academically, all professors are more than qualified and passionate about their subjects. The only con would be extremely large class sizes in first year but they specialize over time so that issue goes away as you go up in years.
