Campus / Facilities

Queen's University

9.5 / 10

Queen's is absolutely stunning. The residences are very good, and there are a lot of single rooms available. The gym, called the ARC, is awesome! It is very new and updated, and there are a lot of different ways to exercise. The campus is the most beautiful in Canada, and the food (buffet style!) is great! Libraries are crowded but beautiful.

I love the library. The student residence is fine but I had a tough time dealing with my retarded neighbours.

Academic counseling was not useful. The people who worked there were curt, rushed, and unhelpful. Although I was lucky enough to interact with department heads and subject-specific undergraduate advisors, these meetings took a lot of time to arrange. Students in large departments or those who have a question that their department head can't answer are left in a lurch.

The internet was fast if you knew how to get on the secure network, the open network was pretty much a crawl during fall and winter semesters. IT were pretty awesome. Academic counselling was okay, doing a fair amount of workshops that were helpful. Mental health counselling is so underfunded and drastically needed. Queen's works their students hard and people are not doing well under the pressure. The school claims to be putting attention towards it but it really feels like nothing has been done. SOLUS is the worst course registration program ever. My doctor at home told me I would have been hospitalized if I had listened to a Queen's doctor's advice to come off of a medication. Most people I know have an anecdote or two about how terrible the doctors were: out of med school and not updated on new things, judgmental about LGBT sexualities and frequency of sex partners. Campus security was good, although a lot of the problems of violence in the school happen at parties and the bar where the security are not.

There is always a lot of helo given to students on campus. Health services and Academic counselling is pretty good and you will always have someone to talk to be it staff or fellow students. Campus security is good too but to be honest nothing "dangerous" ever happens here so you'll be fine

Student / School Culture

Queen's University

5.3 / 10

The student culture at Queen's is in need of evolution. When I lived on-campus, incidents of racism, misogyny, and homophobia were at once rampant and under-reported. Likewise, student-body leaders were frequently embroiled in scandals. I had heard rumours that Queen's was a party school for rich, white kids before I got to Kingston, but a few years there confirmed that for me.

I went to Queen's because of its traditions and reputation as a smart school. What I didn't realize was that it would be the hardest four years of my life because I had not grown up the way a lot of the students have and didn't have the support. My friends who have come from different countries (or Canada but are treated as if they are not Canadian because they are not white) have told me about really terrible experiences of racism at the school. Sure, the sports teams are great and there's some eye candy around but this doesn't make for a good education. I love to party. I love to have a good time. I drink and dance. But most people I know had an experience at Queen's where they were assaulted in one way or another at a house party or the student bar or pub and to me, that's not fun.

The traditions at Queen's are tried at true, you are part of atmosphere where it is easy to tell that everyone wants to be here. This results in a group of hardworking and like minded students. These students work hard and play harder. Queen's is much more than a school, it is a feeling.

Kingston is an ideal location for a university, located halfway between the countries two biggest cities travel to and from Kingston is not a problem. Kingston has more than it's fair share of restaurants as well as some of the best nightlife out there due to the downtown core's proximity to Queen's.

Kingston is a very lovely city.It is a very small one and there aren't as many things to do as say.. Toronto I love it! The people are really nice and it is a university city Almost everyone you meet on the streets is at Queen's so it has a welcome vibe. Also there are many places where there are discounts for students so that's nice. The weather however isn't always pleasant. It gets terribly cold down here but once you have the appropriate attire you will be fine. Most first years live on campus and most upper years live off campus. There are a lot of housing opportunities around campus so nobody lives far. The bus system is really good and free for students! Wherever you are there is a very easy way to get to campus.

The loaction of Queen's university is great because it is like it is in it's own little bubble, where all of the students and student activities are. This makes it all feel very safe because everything is so close and it is such a tight nit community feeling. It is just minutes from downtown which makes for quick, convenient and easy shopping. There are so many close restaurants and the bars are just minutes away. The only downside about location is that it rains a lot and get fairly cold in the winter.

The professors are pretty good overall, and some are amazing! It is extremely easy to approach them, and office hours are excellent if you need extra help. The professors seem very credible, and have various experiences. The reputations are phenomenal. Queen's offers small class sizes, and a fair grading system.

I'll say this for the Queen's professors: they are, largely, excellent. They do their best to be approachable, kind, and understanding to their students. That said, the bureaucratic aspects (including course selection, degree planning, and program reputation) were largely poor. Courses filled up immediately, leaving many students with the wrong combination of credits to graduate. Degree requirements changed.

My profs were awesome, no doubt. But being a smaller department it felt as if they didn't have the support of the school as other programs did. The grading system is okay. First year was really frustrating because it seemed like As were unattainable no matter what you did. the 3.4 GPA system is annoying. My first two years were memorization and that was boring.

Queen's has one of the best connections in the world. With exchange opportunities everywhere. These exchanges lead to networks all over the world to help you kickstart your career early on. There are a ton of extracurriculars! In my program, it is expected that people get involved, and definitely encouraged! There are a ton of opportunities easily available through Queen's websites and wed of mouth, and the opportunities are very high quality. I have not tried to start a committee or club, but I think it would be fairly easy.

Extra-curriculars are a huge part of Queen's. Everyone is involved in something, and every year i have become more and more involved and have regretted more clubs and committees that I did not join that I wish I would have. There are literally clubs for everything, if not multiple, and if there isn't you can start your own club extremely easy.

Queen's university is amazing. For me, I've been able to be involved in intramural hockey, the Queen's Music Club, Queen's Model Parliament, and part of a band. Everywhere you go will shout involvement! If you have an idea of what kind of club you wish to join, Queen's will have it. In terms of athletics itself, the facility is state-of-the-art, and have every amenity you would need. Outside of campus there are still ways to get involved (ex. charities, for me specifically playing shows at bars in a band).

Overall Advocacy

Queen's University

9.4 / 10

Queen's University is absolutely fantastic in almost every aspect. Its inclusiveness for new students stemming from years of community tradition definitely give freshmen their needed encouragement to be a part of the campus. Queen's University although mature through its history is still in development, meaning there are tons of room for students to help develop its culture. Queen's School of Business is recognized on LinkedIn Canada as the third most influential brand in the country however our technological aspects are lagging behind, it is my goal and dream in my years here to help build an entrepreneurial culture that will hopefully level out the playing field between business and technology. New students are most definitely encouraged to change and lead the school to a brighter and more well rounded future.
