This week, we’re celebrating Niel Strydom as Canada’s Student of the Week. Niel is from Terrace, British Columbia, but he was born in South Africa. Niel is quite the athlete, participating in soccer and rowing competitively, as well as several other sports on a recreational level. His career goal is to become a doctor and also volunteers with the United Nations.

UniversityHub caught up with Niel to find out what inspires his work and how he spends his day-to-day. Learn more about Niel by visiting his student profile page

BACKGROUND

Tell us about yourself in under 140 characters.

I am a student at Shawnigan Lake School. I love to row and play soccer, and I am hoping to become a doctor one day. I love playing guitar and volunteering with a program that helps disabled people ride horses in my free time. Anything I can do to help others is time well spent for me.

Why do you enjoy using UniversityHub.ca (or why should others use it)?

I love using UniversityHub.ca because it shows me which universities I am compatible with, and it allows me to connect with a community of other students like myself. I think everyone should use it because it gives a broader view of the potential universities that you want to go to, and might even show you some new ones.

EDUCATION

Where do you currently attend school?

Shawnigan Lake School in British Columbia, Canada

What is your favourite thing about your school?

The teachers are very good at what they do and it allows for better learning.

What do you plan on studying at university and why?

I would like to study sciences and then go into a medical field for my post graduate studies. I would like to become a doctor because I want to be able to help others, and medicine has interested me since I was a kid.

What are you most looking forward to at university?

I am looking forward to being in a new school and meeting new people, as well as challenging myself academically. I am hoping to find a recreational sports club as well to balance the academics and have some fun!

What’s your best study tip or habit you’d like to share?

Don’t leave anything for last minute, the sooner you finish your work, the more free time you have. It also allows you to take your time and make sure it is the best piece of work that you can produce.

What is one major challenge that you’ve had to overcome at school? How did you overcome it?

I had a major concussion at the beginning of the last school year, which made it difficult for me to focus and I missed a lot of school. With the help of my teachers who were very understanding, and all the support I had, I was able to overcome it and still do my schoolwork, which included following through with my AP exams.

EXPERIENCE

What are your main extra-curricular activities?

Soccer, Rowing, Woodwork

What motivates you to do these activities?

I love sports, and soccer and rowing are my two favourites. They allow me to challenge myself and push myself to be better. For woodwork, I love making things. I really enjoy designing a project, and watching it become a reality right before me.
